She Said Look

Project Description:
She Said Look
5-channel video installation
2 minute loop
Artists: Suzanne Bartelson & Susan Kwon

From the display window on a busy street in Chicago, this sculptural video installation investigates notions of idealized femininity. Presented over four screens are visual pairing of the fragmented body and text, with an abstracted female form mouthing words that cannot be heard. This inaudible message, along with the visual distortions and obstructions between performer and viewer, suggest a disconnect between mind, body, and social norms.

By confronting the oversimplified generalizations of female identity, this piece asks of the viewer: In what ways do women contort or manipulate their bodies to be perceived as feminine? How does one stretch or conform to social boundaries?
